This is a multi-layered resource about the ancient Greeks at war. The text is divided into four sections covering historical facts about who the Greeks fought, The Battle of Marathon, the Greek method of fighting and their armour. It includes a quiz, fun facts, photographs, factsheets, links, and a range of extension activities.

  • This resource is useful for the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 7 referring to a depth study of the Greeks at war. Students learn about the wars between Athens and Sparta and between the Greeks and the Persians. It includes the Greek method of fighting and their armour.
  • It is useful for the study of conflict with other societies resulting in colonisation addressed in the Australian Curriculum: History year 7 content description referring to ancient Greece. Students learn about how the city of Mytilene on the island of Lesbos, which had been independent, became a colony of Athens.
  • In this resource students learn about the famous Battle of Marathon where the Greeks defeated the Persians. Before the battle a Greek soldier called Pheidippides ran over 240 kilometres in two days to get help from Sparta. Pheidippides's feat is commemorated in the modern marathon race.
