Weathering, erosion, landforms and regolith - Teacher notes and student activities

This 112 page booklet explores the processes of weathering, erosion and deposition. It highlights the different types of weathering, erosion and transport and provides examples of famous landscapes to enhance the understanding of these processes. It includes case studies about the formation of many Australian landforms ...

Algebra Tiles: Learning Sequence - Calculate

The following is a suggested teaching and learning sequence for using Algebra Tiles.

Even and Odd Orcharding - Calculate

What makes even numbers special? What makes odd numbers… well… odd? Help these farmers plant their fruit trees in rows and patterns, and see what happens when we add, subtract and multiply different combinations of these numbers together! Use this low threshold, high ceiling task to explore the properties of even and odd numbers.

Catch the Moon - Calculate

This game applies students' knowledge of location on a grid and practises directional language. Students develop a strategy to make effective moves, using two dice, counters and a 10 by 10 grid.

Text

Grid Games - Calculate

This game, played in on a grid on the classroom floor, challenges students to develop directional language and use coordinates to locate places on a grid. The instructions include multiple variations on the game which focus on different aspects of location and direction concepts.

Reasoning Year 5 - Calculate

The focus of this activity is for students to recognise the relationship between the dimensions of a square or rectangle and the perimeter and area of these shapes. Students will need to use a systematic approach to show that they have found all the possible solutions.

Where’s the mankarr? Recording and visualising data: Part 2

In this second of two lessons, students view a video to record data about the bilby (mankarr). They visualise and interpret the data.

How my water travels

In this lesson sequence, students explore what happens as water soaks into or runs over the ground. They gain an understanding of a catchment from a sandpit model that show how water moves across the landscape. Students then trace the journey that their water takes every day, from catchment or aquifer to tap.

Subtraction Strategies - Calculate

This game gives students opportunities to practice subtraction skills and to learn subtraction strategies, including the jump strategy, the split (or partition) strategy, compensation and the count-up to strategy (sometimes called the Shopkeeper’s method).

Mystery Picture - Calculate

This activity asks students to follow directions and use grid coordinates to create a picture.

Decimats - Calculate

This activity allows students to develop an understanding of decimals and how they connect to fractions and the area model. It enables them to make comparisons between decimals and their sizes and build a greater understanding of what makes a larger decimal and smaller decimal. The decimats provide them with a representational ...

Converting Measures Year 6 - Calculate

The focus of this activity is to find out what students know and understand about length and the metric system.

Kitchen scales

Use this diagnostic task to assess a student's understanding of mass and the graduations on a kitchen scale.

The coloured cube

Use this task to reveal if the student can see in their ‘mind’s eye’ the transformation from a 2D net to a 3D object.

Solar still activity

In this activity students create a solar still and use a predict-observe-explain strategy to investigate how coloured salty water transforms into clear unsalted water. This activity is useful for exploring changes of state (evaporation and condensation) and water cycles.

Fog and clouds

In this activity, students are introduced to water's different states of matter using the provided 'The water cycle' poster and 'Whizzy's incredible journeys' pick-a-path book.

Prime and Composite Numbers - Calculate

This unit investigates prime and composite numbers. Prime numbers are the elements of number system. Combining primes together by multiplication gives us all of the other whole numbers, just as combining atoms of different elements gives us the molecules and compounds of the physical world.

Text

Fractions Year 6 - Calculate

This activity challenges students to unpack a rule and see if it is being used correctly. Often students will just learn a rule and blindly use it. This task asks students to stop and think and then make corrections to ensure the rule works in all cases (generalise).

Throw a Shape - Calculate

In this game, students throw dice to determine the number of edges and vertices of a 3D shape, they then use physical materials to build their shapes. The game gives them an opportunity to practise geometric reasoning, identifying shapes based on their properties and visualising objects in three dimensions.

Where’s the mankarr? Video observation data: Part 1

In this first of two lessons, students investigate data from animal observations recorded by a video camera. Students take on the role of ‘researchers’ and use secondary data about an endangered Australian marsupial.
