Voronoi Diagrams - Calculate

This unit of work explores coordinate geometry in the context of Voronoi diagrams. Students use linear coordinate geometry to construct Voronoi diagrams by finding the gradient of a line segment, then finding the midpoint, a perpendicular line and finally the perpendicular bisector.

Pattern Blocks - Calculate

This activity uses pattern blocks to explore patterns and the relationship between numbers. Students use the blocks to create and describe other shapes and since the blocks are relational they can be used for other investigations. For example, turn the blocks into units – if the triangle is one what is the value of the hexagon?

Number Walk Rich Task - Calculate

This downloadable lesson resource introduces the concept of ‘Number Walks’: taking a stroll with the class or group around the school or the local neighbourhood. Guided by the teacher, students note down anything they see that relates back to their understanding of the topic and then conduct a plenary session back in the ...

Counter-intuitive probability

This lesson is designed to demonstrate the ways in which random chance can be counter-intuitive. Students will explore how assumptions made in probability can be risky and investigate how to perform precise calculations to answer probability questions. The lesson is outlined in detail including NSW curriculum links, learning ...

Loot boxes

In this lesson, students will create their own video game concept, complete with a loot box system. They will then calculate the probability of obtaining all unique items to form a complete set, considering the challenges this random system entails and how the gambling system inherent could lead to unexpected losses. The ...

Gambling as a cultural identity in Australia

In this lesson, students critically evaluate gambling’s link with Australia’s cultural identity through the lens of the traditional ANZAC day game of Two-up. Students will then propose alternatives to that aspect of the Australian cultural identity, encouraging their local community towards healthier choices around gambling ...

Poker machines (simulation)

This lesson explores how poker machines work and what is meant by the term Return to Player (RTP) percentage. Students run simulations to determine how small betting amounts can lead to a large cumulative loss over time and examine how reinvesting profits or wins from playing the poker machine back into the machine has ...

Lucky lottery

In this lesson, students play a simple lottery game, analyse their odds of winning and how this influences the decisions they made. Students determine the differences between experimental and mathematical probability, conduct a simulation modelling an event and critically evaluate the odds of winning the lottery. The lesson ...

Water challenges

In this culminating activity, students use their understanding about how people use and manage water to respond to hypothetical scenarios about water shortages. In this activity, students discuss 'what if' scenarios: possible reasons for the shortages, possible consequences and ways to manage the situation.

How much rain?

In this lesson sequence, students participate in a puzzle hunt in the school grounds to find letter clues that lead to the location of a special gift (a rain gauge) related to water. Students then make rain gauges and record rainfall in the school grounds with both the hand-made and commercial rain gauges.

Pattern & Algebra Year 1 - Calculate

The focus of this activity is to discover if students can use their knowledge of repeating patterns created with objects and extend this to number patterns. It is important to remember to ask students to continue patterns to the right and left. This is important as students need to be able to count forwards and backwards.

Make 10 - Calculate

This game challenges students to choose pairs of cards that sum to ten. The game develops students' skills of addition and subtraction, creating simple equations and using mathematical language to describe their thinking processes.

Proportion, Graphs and Equations - Calculate

This unit challenges students to identify and describe everyday examples of ‘direct’ and ‘indirect’ proportion. They learn to recognise direct and inverse proportion from graphs, distinguish between positive and negative gradients and use the equation y = kx to model direct linear proportion.

Factorising Quadratics and Solving - Calculate

This activity explores the properties of the family of functions and their graphs known as parabolas. The unit includes an AMSI Interactive online module, a range of other AMSI Schools and external links and video tutorials and some extension or enrichment ideas to take their understanding further. A short quiz at the end ...
