Teacher guide Early Childhood iPad Initiative

TLF ID S7085

This teacher resource is about a strategy called the Early Childhood iPad Initiative implemented in years 1 and 2 in 19 Western Australian primary schools. The strategy aims to integrate iPads into all aspects of the schools' engagement with early years literacy and numeracy. The resource describes the strategy's two-stage approach: the first involved technological preparation, pre-program assessment and professional learning; the second, the action learning phase, involved using the iPads in the classroom. The resource discusses the outcomes and the lessons learned, and provides references and links to relevant readings.

Educational value
  • This resource is of use in supporting the ICT general capability as it applies in the English and mathematics learning areas. It describes the Early Childhood iPad Initiative in some detail and reports on its outcomes of children's increased motivation and engagement in learning and teachers' positive responses to integrating iPads into their pedagogy. The Initative is of particular use in relation to the capability's organising elements of creating and communicating with ICT.
  • The resource is also useful in identifying the types of assistance the schools valued as they integrated iPads into early childhood literacy and numeracy learning within an action learning framework. These included professional learning programs; help in selecting apps aligned to identified learner needs in order to maximise their literacy and numeracy achievement; and support in implementing iPad technology strategies in classrooms. The resource includes the Early Childhood iPad Initiative School Initiation Pack and links to Andrew Churches' adaptation of Bloom's Taxonomy for digital use.
