Teacher guide Reflective writing: the 3D format

TLF ID S7033

This is a teacher resource describing a scaffolding strategy developed by New South Wales teacher Kerri-Jane Burke to help her students analyse texts and write reflective responses to them. The resource describes the three-dimensional writing strategy - Describe, Disclose, Decision - in more detail, outlining how it provides students with a metacognitive awareness of what is required of them as readers/viewers of texts and writers of text responses. The resource is organised in nine sections: Summary; Target student group; Method; Results; Lessons learned; Next steps; Research base; Further reading and links; and Contacts.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for English curriculum in the secondary years, particularly for content descriptions that refer to evaluating texts, reflecting on opinions about aspects of literary texts, and presenting an argument about a literary text based on initial impressions and subsequent analysis of the whole text. There are images of whiteboards with class discussion summaries. These show the effectiveness of the three-dimensional scaffold.
  • The resource may also be of use for the Critical and creative thinking general capability as enacted in English. It indicates that the scaffolding strategy targets metacognition and helps students understand the structures and features of reflective, analytical and evaluative writing.
