Teacher guide TrackSAFE Education Primary School Resources: Year 3, Year 4 Health & Physical Education

TLF ID M025089

This unit of work focuses students on becoming aware of unsafe situations and using self-talk to keep themselves safe. Students identify strategies to avoid unsafe situations and communicate their understandings by creating comic strips, role plays and games. Finally students are challenged to identify an idea that could affect positive change and collaboratively create an action plan targeting teenagers to implement the change.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for years 3 and 4 Health and Physical Education curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the content description that refers to describing and applying strategies that can be used in situations that make them feel uncomfortable or unsafe. Lesson 1 involves students in exploring the safe choices they made on the way to school; they then create a picture of travelling to school and use thought bubbles to examine their thinking when they make safe choices. In lesson 2 they identify places to take extra care around the rail network, and what they can do to keep themselves safe.
  • The resource is also very useful for the content description referring to identifying actions that promote health, safety and wellbeing. Lesson 3 of the resource is very useful for this content description. Students create a comic strip, role play, or game to identify strategies to use in unsafe situations. In lesson 3 they then develop strategies for persuading teenagers to behave safely around trains, design an app for safe level crossing use, or act as a TV reporter to interview level crossing users about safety.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to build on and demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding of safety actions needed to stay safe in the community and in road environments when near train tracks.
  • This resource is also extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for years 3 and 4 Health and Physical Education, particularly content descriptions within the Personal, Social and Community Health strands. Students are engaged in describing and applying safe strategies around rail locations and in promoting rail safety messages in their school or community.
