Teacher guide How do you make a difference?

TLF ID M025074

In this learning sequence, students determine improvements they would like to see in public transport. They research ways of suggesting improvements to public transport authorities and other decision makers, and prepare letters and emails for this purpose. They prioritise future improvements and develop arguments to support their points of view. Students also review safety information provided by public transport authorities and create their own advice that targets primary-school-aged children.

Educational value
  • This resource is of value for the years 5 and 6 English content descriptions about planning, drafting and publishing informative and persuasive print and multimodal texts, choosing text structures, language features, images and sound appropriate to purpose and audience. Students are challenged to plan, draft and write a letter or email message to their local state representative about a public transport issue that they feel needs improvements.
  • The resource also strongly supports the years 5 and 6 English content descriptions that focus on using comprehension strategies to analyse information, integrating and linking ideas from a variety of print and digital sources. Students use multiple sources of information to investigate a local public transport issue that needs improvement, then analyse and prioritise issues to be acted upon.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the year 5 and 6 humanities and social sciences curriculum, particularly the Civics and Citizenship substrand, as students discover their local parliamentary representatives and how the electoral processes work, and then through advocacy, engage with the key processes that underpin Australia's democracy.
  • This resource is of great value to supporting English and the Humanities in the Victorian curriculum, as it directly links to relevant Victorian curriculum content descriptions.
