Learning objects MOVE primary – art in motion

MOVE primary was created to introduce and inspire primary students to the magic and possibilities of video art. Each of these five highly acclaimed young Australian artists, Shaun Galdwell, Jess MacNeil, Joan Ross, Grant Stevens and Daniel von Sturmer, brings different ideas and techniques to work which we hope will succeed in opening the eyes of the young to the wonders of contemporary art, the art of our time. Artists have always experimented with new ways of expressing ideas about our world and new materials with which to do so - from tubes of paint to the camera to the moving images of film and video. Moving images are part of our everyday lives: on TV, computer screens, in cinemas and shopping centres. Video art captures movement and time, it takes time to watch and changes as we're watching. Like all artists, video artists consider how, where and why they are making the work, where it will be seen and what they want to communicate. Each of the five artists whose work is represented in MOVE primary takes his or her video camera on a different journey and has a different story to tell.   • MOVE primary – art in motion is a teaching and learning package containing five resources, each focused on the video artwork of a different Australian artist.
  • Each resource contains: a video artwork for study; a video introduction by the artist; an artist statement; appreciating and artmaking activities.
  • Each resource is aimed at specific stages within the K-6 syllabus and cross curricula links to other syllabuses are suggested.
  • Aligns to the following outcomes from the NSW Creative Arts K-6 syllabus: VAS1.1: Makes artworks in a particular way about experiences of real and imaginary things. VAS1.2: Uses the forms to make artworks according to varying requirements. VAS1.3: Begins to interpret the meaning of artworks, acknowledging the roles of artist and audience. VAS1.4: Begins to interpret the meaning of artworks, acknowledging the roles of artist and audience. VA2.1: Represents the qualities of experiences and things that are interesting or beautiful by choosing among aspects of subject matter. VAS2.2: Uses the forms to suggest the qualities of subject matter. VAS2.3: Acknowledges that artists make artworks for different reasons and that various interpretations are possible. VAS2.4: Identifies connections between subject matter in artworks and what they refer to, and appreciates the use of particular techniques. VA3.1: Investigates subject matter in an attempt to represent likenesses of things in the world. VAS3.2: Makes artworks for different audiences, assembling materials in a variety of ways. VAS3.3: Acknowledges that audiences respond in different ways to artworks and that there are different opinions about artworks. VAS3.4: Communicates about the ways in which subject matter is represented in artworks.
