Everyone can play. That's the message in this Stage 3 unit on adaptive and inclusive sports and games. Adaptive sports are not just for people with a disability, in fact adaptive sports make important changes that allow everyone to play in a fair and fun way. Learn about some of the adaptive sports played at the Invictus Games, play some adaptive sports and games with your class, and then create your own own adaptive sport.

Educational value
  • Students will develop an appreciation for adaptive sports as a competitive, fun and fair activity for all. They will give reasons for the need to be inclusive, and will be able to describe ways in which adaptive sports support inclusivity on and off the playing field. Students will also get to experience a small collection of adaptive sports and games that will challenge them and expand their appreciateion of athletes and competitors who play adaptive sports.
  • Aligns to the following NSW Syllabus outcomes: Existing (2014) PDHPE Syllabus (K-6): • COS3.3: communicates confidently in a variety of situations. • MOS3.4: refines and applies movement skills creatively to a variety of challenging situations. • GSS3.8: applies movement skills in games and sports that require communication, cooperation, decision making and observation of rules. New (2018) PDHPE Syllabus (K-10): • PD3-3: evaluates the impact of empathy, inclusion and respect on themselves and others. • PD3-4: adapts movement skills in a variety of physical activity contexts. • PD3-5: proposes, applies and assesses solutions to movement challenges. • PD3-8: creates and participates in physical activities to promote healthy and active lifestyles.
