Teacher guide reSolve: Authentic Problems: 10000 Centicubes

TLF ID M024883

This sequence of four lessons integrates content in number and measurement to deepen students' understanding and confidence working with larger numbers. Students work flexibly with numbers up to 10 000 as they determine suitable dimensions for a container that can hold 10 000 centicubes. They are challenged to plan, construct and justify their ideal container. The unit also provides opportunities for building the concepts of informal and formal units of volume. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry special topic 'Authentic Problems'.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 4 mathematics content descriptions about working with numbers of up to five digits, including developing strategies for calculating and solving problems. The unit gives multiple opportunities for students to work with numbers up to 10 000, applying multiplication facts, developing multiplicative thinking and appreciating the scale of large numbers.
  • This resource offers ways for teachers to develop the links between multiplicative thinking and calculating area, including building layers of centicubes and calculating base areas and heights for their own centicube prisms.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it engages students in estimating a solution to a problem and then check the solution by recalling addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. It also provides students with opportunities to estimate and compare units of length and volume using formal and informal units.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit uses a learning and teaching model with four phases: Discover, Devise, Develop and Defend. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
