Teacher guide reSolve: Reasoning With 2D Shapes

TLF ID M021828

This sequence of three lessons explores shape properties and skills in manipulating shapes using transformations. Students create two-dimensional shapes by joining pins on a circular geoboard, explore the different shapes that can be made by joining together a set number of identical equilateral triangles and investigate the different tetrominoes that can be made by joining together four squares. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, discussion points and student resources such as templates. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 2 mathematics content description about describing and drawing two-dimensional shapes. Students are engaged in a range of activities where they identify the key features of polygons, such as counting the edges and corners.
  • This resource is also valuable for the year 2 mathematics content descriptions about investigating the effect of moving shapes and of one-step slides and flips of shapes. Students explore translating, flipping and rotating composite shapes, comparing possible combinations and identifying uniqueness in shapes they create.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides multiple opportunities for students to visualise, identify and sort 2D shapes, describing their key features.
