Teacher guide Heritage Council Victoria: resources for teachers and students

This is a collection of resources exploring Victoria’s history and heritage. There are four main sections. The Victoria's Framework of Historical Themes section includes a downloadable teacher guide and lesson starters, it is organised in historical themes. The Vic-Heritage App section provides search functionality to find significant buildings located near by or within a specified area. The What House is that? section is an interactive Victorian streetscape with nine different houses from different eras. The Culture Victoria is a collection of stories from different cultures and organisations.





Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for the year 10 History curriculum. It relates to The Globalising World depth study, in particular the content descriptions that refer to the nature and development of popular culture in Australia; and the inter-years between wars. The Victoria's Framework of Historical Themes section and the Vic-Heritage App section are particularly useful. The learning activities located in the Lesson Starters for Themes and the Teacher Guide provides useful advice. The links in the Culture Victoria section of the resource are also relevant, particularly the link titled From Riches to rags and back again.
  • The resource is also very relevant for the Making a Better World depth study in the year 9 History curriculum. It is relevant for the content descriptions that refer to the living conditions and experiences of men, women and children around the turn of the twentieth century. The Victoria's Framework of Historical Themes section and Culture Victoria section are very useful here.
  • The resource is also relevant for the year 5 and 6 History curriculum. In particular the content descriptions that refer to: the role of significant individuals in shaping Australia; and the stories of people who migrated to Australia. The Culture Victoria section of the resource is useful particularly the links titled: Unearthing a 19th Century Chinese Kiln; Tales from the Deep; and Restoring St Nicholas.
  • The resources within this website also provided learning opportunity within the upper primary and secondary Geography curriculum.
