Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for the year 9 and 10 The Arts Drama curriculum. It is relevant for five content descriptions and is particularly useful for the content descriptions referring to: improvising with narrative structure when developing ideas and exploring subtext; manipulating drama elements to develop physical and psychological aspects of characters; refining the expressive capacity of voice and movement to communicate ideas and action. Learning experience 1 of the resource involves students in developing characters by exploring provocative questions, describing different viewpoints, exploring behaviour at rail network settings and experimenting with body, voice and movement.
  • The resource is also very useful for the content descriptions referring to: structuring drama to engage an audience through manipulation of dramatic action, forms and performance styles; and performing devised and scripted drama making artistic choices and shaping design elements to unify dramatic meaning for an audience. Learning experiences 2 and 3 of the resource involve students in using different conventions and techniques to develop a script about waiting at a rail level crossing. Students revise and strengthen their script by considering where metaphors and symbols could be used and then perform for an audience.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to explore, build on and demonstrate their knowledge of using body, voice, movement and space to dramatise a situation at a rail level crossing. Students explore provocative questions, characters, settings, viewpoints and actions.
  • This resource is also extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for The Arts in years 9 and 10, it addresses all of the content descriptions within the Explore and Express Ideas, Drama Practices and Present and Perform strands. Students are challenged to examine behavours around level crossings by improvising a scenario and critiquing others' performances. They then refine this to create a 60 second drama. Finally they plan, rehearse and perform a longer piece to encourage safety around level crossings, using deliberate choices for the techniques they use and with consideration to their intended audience.
