This is a unit of work about how to be a safe, active and responsible citizen on and around the rail network. The resource focuses on identifying the hazards and the hazardous behaviours and influences such as emotions and peer pressure that may impact the decisions young people make on and around the rail network. It includes: teacher notes, three learning experiences, two resources, teacher and student assessment and information for parents and carers. Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for the year 7 and 8 Health and Physical Education curriculum as it relates to at least six content descriptions. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions that refer to: promoting and using practices for health, safety and wellbeing for themselves and their communities; and strategies to seek help for themselves or others. Learning experience 1 of the resource is relevant for these content descriptions as it involves students in identifying hazards on and around the rail network. The Hazard checklist is particularly useful.
  • The resource is also very useful for the content description referring to analysing factors that influence emotions and developing strategies to demonstrate empathy and sensitivity. Learning experiences 2 and 3 of the resource are very useful for this content description. Students explore: the causes of hazardous behaviours on or around the rail network; engage in an activity titled Nine 'Dumb ways to die'; role-play how emotions and peer pressure can affect decisions; and make a set of trading cards to help manage peer pressure on and around the rail network.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to build on and demonstrate their knowledge of factors that influence the behaviour and decisions of young people as well as exploring strategies to ensure safe behaviour on and around the rail network.
  • This resource is also extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for years 7 and 8 Health and Physical Education, particularly content descriptions within the Personal, Social and Community Health strands. Students are engaged in investigating behaviours around the rail network that are unsafe, roleplaying a bullying scenario and analysing the emotions and thoughts that lead to this behaviour, and exploring ways to make the rail network safer for young people including creating a youth advocacy action plan.
