Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for the year 7 and 8 English curriculum as it relates to seven content descriptions across these year levels. It is particularly relevant for the year 7 content descriptions that refer to comparing text structures and language features of multimodal texts and explaining how they combine to influence; and analysing how point of view is generated in visual texts by using gaze, angle and social distance. Learning experiences 1 and 2 engage students in describing and deconstructing a visual or multimodal text to discover the features that have been used strengthen the rail safety message.
  • The resource is also highly relevant for the year 7 and 8 English content descriptions that refer to planning, creating and drafting imaginative, informative and persuasive texts that raise issues, report events and advance opinions by using deliberate language and textual choices. Learning experience 3 of the resource is useful here as it involves students in creating, writing and responding to blogs and planning and writing a persuasive text.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to build on and demonstrate their knowledge of the features of visual and multimodal texts as well providing messages about rail safety.
  • This resource is extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for years 7 and 8 English, particularly content descriptions within the Language and Literacy strands. Students engage in comparing text structures in multimodal texts, creating their own persuasive texts, examining how point of view and layers of meaning is generated in visual texts, particularly in texts related to conveying safety messages.
