This is a unit of work comprising five sequences of activities in which students investigate cattle and sheep production systems and present a documentary, song, poster or brochure in response. In the first sequence, students engage with the industries, sources of information and possible forms of response. In the second they explore innovative systems of cattle and sheep production and start to visualise a response. In the third they explain various sustainable production systems and story-board their response. In the fourth and fifth they elaborate their understandings in their response, and reflect on their learning. The 38-page unit includes links to resources and exemplars, an extensive list of references, fast facts about cattle and sheep, and a range of student hand-outs.

Educational value
  • This comprehensive unit of work is of significant value for the years 7 and 8 band in both the design and technologies and the digital technologies curriculums. All five sequences are relevant for the food and fibre context of the design and technologies curriculum and support the content description in the Knowledge and understanding strand that refers to analysing how food is produced when designing managed environments and how these can become more sustainable. The second sequence is specifically relevant for the analysis of beef and lamb production and the design of managed environments; while the third sequence is particularly useful for sustainable practices.
  • The unit's twin tasks provide substantial opportunities for students to come to grips with content descriptions in the Skills and processes strand of the digital technologies curriculum that are about acquiring data from a range of sources and evaluating authenticity, accuracy and timeliness, and planning and managing projects, including tasks, time and other resources required. The unit's research task is also relevant for the content description in the Science as a human endeavour strand of the years 7 and 8 curriculum that refers to science understanding influencing the development of practices in areas of human activity such as agriculture.
  • The resource is also of importance for two further aspects of the curriculum - the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority and the Information and communication technology general capability. The research task emphasises the priority's organising idea that designing action for sustainability requires an evaluation of past practices, the assessment of scientific and technological developments, and balanced judgments based on projected future economic, social and environmental impacts. The production of a documentary, song, poster or brochure allows students to enhance their skills in relation to the ICT capability's learning continuum of generating solutions to challenges and tasks.
