This is a unit of work about migration to Australia from 1945. It has a particular focus on how migration has shaped Australia as a nation over time. It has four teaching and learning sequences that explore: changes to Australia’s immigration policies including the dismantling of the White Australia Policy; reasons for migration; conflict in society; and multicultural Australia. The resource includes notes for teachers, assessment tasks and links to the Australian curriculum, video clips, texts, interview transcripts and images. Teachers should be aware that this resource may contain sensitive material for users with personal refugee or migration experiences.

Educational value
  • This is a very useful resource for The globalising world depth study in the year 10 history curriculum. It is particulary relevant for the content descriptions refering to: the waves of post-World War II migration to Australia; and the impact of a world event or development that had a significant impact on Australias migration. Sequences 2 and 4 include information about Asylum seekers, refugees and migrants from Vietnam, Cambodia and Europe. Information about significant events or causes for migration is also included. The resource is also very useful for the content descriptions referring to: how changes to government policy impacted Australia's migration patterns, particularly the abolition of the White Australia Policy; and how migration has changed Australias identity as a nation and its international relationship. Sequence 2 Dismantling the White Australia Policy in the 1970s provides useful information. Sequences 3 and 4 also provide relevant information about the debates and changes made to government policy overtime in relation to immigration. This resource supports the intercultural understanding general capability as students learn about the changes to Australia's Immigration policy and its effects over time and learn about the experiences of asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in Australia.
