Educational value
  • This is a very useful resource for the year 6 History curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions referring to: the experiences of democracy and citizenship in Australia; and stories of people who migrated to Australia. The first two sequences focus on exploring human rights and freedoms through The Freedom Riders and the creation of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975. Sequences 3 and 4 are also relevant as they explore migration stories and information about the reasons people migrated to Australia. The resource also has value in relation to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture cross-curriculum priority, particularly the Organising Idea that refers to viewing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples experiences through historical, social and political lenses. The second sequence provides useful information about Aboriginal rights and freedoms in 1960-70. The rich assessment tasks linked to each of the sequences provide opportunities for students to demonstrate knowledge gained throughout the unit of work and additional understanding around race, rights and immigration in Australia.
