This is a unit of work about disability rights, inclusion and sport. It explores: the benefits of valuing diversity; the physical, mental and social benefits of physical activity; and how diversity and difference can be respected through sport. The resource includes: an introduction, a focus, six lessons, learning outcomes, links to the Australian Curriculum and resources. The resource is produced by the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Educational value
  • This is a very useful resource for the year 7 and 8 Health and Physical Education curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions referring to: modifying rules and scoring systems to allow for inclusive participation; practising, applying and transferring movement concepts and strategies; and using feedback to improve body control and coordination when performing specialised movement skills. Teaching and learning activities 2, 3, 4 and 5 explore and provide opportunities for learners to design and participate in more inclusive, modified and adapted sports. This resource is also a very useful for the content descriptions referring to: the benefits of valuing diversity and promoting inclusivity; the impact of transition and change on identities; and factors that influence emotions and strategies that demonstrate empathy and sensitivity. Teaching and learning activities 1, 4 and 6 include relevant information about: emotional factors that influence participation in sport; stories about the impacts of a disability; and the benefits of inclusion.
  • This resource is useful in supporting the personal and social capability of valuing diversity and promoting inclusivity. The lessons and activities included within the resource enable students to develop an understanding of disability rights, equality and the importance of inclusion within sports. It focuses on developing empathy and respect for people with disabilities and the positive impact that inclusivity in sport has on the health and wellbeing of individuals and the wider community. Students will learn about the importance of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) in protecting individuals from unfair treatment in many parts of public life, including sport.
  • This resource is useful in supporting the ethical understanding capability as lessons focus on developing an understanding about the rights and responsibilities of individuals and the importance of challenging disability discrimination.
