Text Interconnections and human wellbeing

TLF ID M018191

This is an online resource exploring the interconnections between Australian consumers and Indonesian cashew farmers, with cashews grown by farmers on Flores, a remote Indonesian Island, eventually sold for a high price in Australia. It looks at the role of World Vision Indonesia in helping farmers to carry out a market analysis and describes a co-operative formed by the farmers to gain current market information and auction their cashews for a better price, that now provides a model for other farmers to follow. The resource includes a video featuring interviews with farmers, buyers and a World Vision aid worker and includes maps, photographs, and data as well as activities and a list of resources.

Educational value
  • This resource is of significant value in supporting the Geography curriculum for year 9 particularly for the content descriptions in Exploring interconnections referring to the way transportation and information and communication technologies are used to connect people to services, information and people in other places; and the ways that places and people are interconnected with other places through trade in goods and services. The resource explains how a simple communication technology; a mobile telephone; helped cashew farmers on Flores to increase their income by enabling them to find out the market price for cashews in the nearest large market. It also looks at how the cashew market links Indonesian farmers with Australian importers. It is also of significant value in supporting the Geography curriculum for year 10, particularly for the content descriptions in Geographies of human wellbeing referring to reasons for and consequences of spatial variations in human wellbeing on a regional scale within a country of the Asia region; and the role of international and national government and non-government organisations; initiatives in improving human wellbeing in Australia and other countries. The resource highlights the challenges to wellbeing related to a regions remoteness from major markets. It describes the role of World Vision in empowering cashew farmers on Flores to improve their marketing of cashews and increase the wellbeing of their community in terms of health and education. The resource supports the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organising ideas about sustainable patterns of living relying on the interdependence of healthy social, economic and ecological systems. It is also relevant to the Asia and Australias engagement with Asia cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organising idea that Interrelationships between humans and the diverse environments in Asia shape the region and have global implications.
