This resource is a unit of work about disability awareness with a focus on the concept of inclusion. It includes an introductory page for teachers and nine lesson plans. Each lesson has an overview, links to the Australian Curriculum, sequence of learning, activities and linked resources. Themes explored include: inclusive communities; making changes for the future; every contribution counts; different perspectives; Universal Design; supportive environments; identifying issues; consultation; taking action; and evolving thinking. This unit of work is one part of the larger resource titled the Everyone Everyday Program.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for the year 5 and 6 Health and Physical Education curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions referring to: how valuing diversity can positively influence the wellbeing of the community; and recognising how the media can influence personal attitudes, beliefs, decisions and behaviours. Lessons one, three and nine are very useful for valuing diversity and positively influencing the community. Lessons four and seven are useful for examining how personal attitudes can be influenced by the media and other people.
  • This is also a very useful resource for the year 5 and 6 Civics and Citizenship curriculum. It is relevant for the content descriptions referring to: reflecting on personal actions as a citizen in the school and wider community; and working in groups to identify, make decisions and develop a plan of action. Lessons three, four, five and nine provide opportunities for students to reflect on their personal actions at school and in the wider community. Lessons six, eight and nine involve students in working in groups to identify issues, consider solutions and plan for action.
  • The resource is also useful for concepts in the General capabilities area of the year 5 and 6 curriculum; in particular the Personal and social capability and the Ethical understanding capability.
  • Lessons eight and nine have been designed to enable students to demonstrate their learning and new knowledge gained through out the unit of work.
