This is a website about rural life in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries; there is a particular focus on community activities that brought people together to socialise and as a boost for morale. It includes information about community events, social and recreational activities and key organisations and societies for men and women at this time. The resource includes text, images, and extracts and transcripts from historical documents.

Educational value
  • This is a very useful resource for the 6 history curriculum. It is particulary useful for the content description referring to the contribution of individuals and groups to the development of Australian society. The Community events section and the Organisations and societies section of the resource provide relevant information about the development of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW and the Country Women's Association of NSW.
  • This is also a very useful resource for the year 9 history curriculum, particularly the Making a nation depth study. It is relevant for the content description referring to the living and working conditions in Australia around 1900. The collections of annotated photos and images in the resource provide relevant information about typical life in rural Australia at this time.
