This is a resource about the environmental, climatic, natural disaster and pest challenges faced during settlement in Australia. It includes details about land management techniques; extreme and unique weather conditions, including floods and droughts; bushfires; animal and plant pests; and water management. Text, images, photos, transcripts and extracts from historical documents and collections of art works are included.

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for the year 5 history curriculum. It is particulary relevant for the content descriptions referring to the nature of convict or colonial presence, including the factors that influenced patterns of development and how the environment changed; and the impact of a significant development or event on a colony, such as drought. It is relevant for the first content description, providing information about land development and environmental change. The Natural disasters section of the resource is useful for the second content description; particulary annotated photos in the Drought subsection.
  • This is also a useful resource for the year 5 and year 7 geography curriculum, in particular the content descriptions referring to the impact of bushfires or floods on environments and communities; and the nature of water scarcity and ways of overcoming it. The section of the resource about natural disasters, including floods, bushfires, droughts and water management provides relevant annotated images and information.
