This is 10:33-minute video about the crucial importance of aquatic plants and animals from rice-based ecosystems in the diet of Lao people. It shows how a variety of organisms are caught or harvested in the rice fields and nearby water bodies and identifies that 92 species are used for food in rice-growing areas with fish the most important, followed by frogs. When the fields are drained, the harvest is greater and the surplus is shown being preserved or sold at markets. The video indicates that this source of nutrients is under threat from climate change, population growth, overfishing and a shift to a market economy. The video concludes by calling for improvements to the management of aquatic ecosystems.
