This is a web resource about the availability of fresh water in Australia and other countries that includes a student activity accompanied by a teacher guide providing background information and a lesson plan. A student worksheet provides activity instructions and a lotus diagram for the students to complete. The activity requires students to research information on average rainfall, water concerns, water management strategies and health issues caused by unsanitary water supplies for Australia, Malaysia, Kenya, Greenland, Norway, Ireland, France and India. The resource includes labels for assigning water stress levels to countries on a world map as part of a class discussion.

  • This is a useful resource that supports the Geographical Knowledge and Understanding strand of the geography curriculum for years 7 and 10, particularly for the content descriptions that refer to the nature of water scarcity and ways of overcoming it, including studies drawn from Australia and West Asia and/or North Africa; and the different ways of measuring and mapping human wellbeing and development, and how these can be applied to measure differences between places. It also supports the Geographical Inquiry and Skills strand for years 7 and 10.
  • This resource supports the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority. It encourages students to consider the availability of fresh water, water management strategies and any health issues caused by unsanitary water for a variety of countries and to compare countries in terms of water stress.
