Teacher guide True, real, compelling: the power of a story

This is a compilation of four teaching sequences about the power of stories. It includes sections on the elements that make stories powerful; their impacts on the reader; how a story of a woman who is HIV-positive can be communicated; HIV AIDS in South Africa; effective ways of telling stories; how stories can communicate complex social issues; how to make a radio diary; World AIDS Day; and a survey that assesses levels of HIV risk. The section on the woman who is HIV-positive includes stories that use a variety of media texts including a written transcript, an animation, a film trailer, a radio diary with photographs, and an online interview.

Educational value
  • This is a very valuable resource for exploring literary texts that consider themes of human experience, interpersonal relationships and ethical dilemmas in real-world settings in the year 10 English curriculum. It is particularly relevant to the content description about comparing and evaluating how 'voice' as a literary device can be used in a range of different types of texts to evoke particular emotional responses. The written transcript, animation, film trailer, radio diary with photos and online interview are important here.
  • The resource contributes to students attaining the achievement standard for year 10 English. It helps students evaluate how text structures can be used in innovative ways by an author, develop their own interpretations of texts, evaluate other interpretations, and listen for ways features within texts can be manipulated to achieve particular effects. Students apply their understandings and create a wide range of texts to articulate complex ideas.
  • The resource is also relevant to the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organising idea that world views are formed by experiences at personal, local, national and global levels, and are linked to individual and community actions for sustainability; and the focus on world views that value diversity and social justice. The stories contain outstanding examples of experiences at personal, local, national and global levels and actions for a sustainable future.
  • The resource is very relevant to the Intercultural understanding and Ethical understanding general capabilities. It encourages understanding about the complexity of HIV AIDS issues, supports students as they learn about the experiences of others and provides information about issues affecting others worldwide.
