This is a unit of inquiry made up of 12 learning sequences for year 8 in the English for the Australian Curriculum resource. Each learning sequence contains a series of resources, suggested activities to carry out with students and a post-activity reflection. Students will explore how the concept of rubbish, garbage or trash has inspired authors and artists to use it as a setting in stories or as a social and political topic of blogs and articles, thematic documentaries and works of art.

  • This resource has 35 specific elaborations in activities and tasks in sequences for year 8 content descriptions across the Language, Literature and Literacy strands and sub-strands of the Australian Curriculum: English.
  • The resource contains a range of activities and tasks, supported by worksheets, with two key summative assessment tasks via a critical reading assignment and the creation of a written feature article. Links to relevant Curriculum content descriptions are provided for activities within sequences, summarised in a table format with links to elaborations in unit content, and are mapped on the website in overview tables for each unit, along with links to sequences for Cross-curriculum priorities and General capabilities.
  • The resource will help students attain the achievement standard for the year 8 in which students understand how the selection of text structures is influenced by the selection of language mode and how this varies for different purposes and audiences.
  • This resource has connections throughout to the cross-curriculum priority Sustainability, and in two sequences, texts are explored that discuss Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia. Literacy, Information and communication technology (ICT) and Critical and creative thinking are a focus of all sequences. Several sequences explore Personal and social responsibility via groupwork. Ethical understanding is explored through personal values and ethical decisions in sequences. In addition, students are encouraged in Intercultural understanding.
