TLF ID M012758

This is a review of a 2011 dance performance titled 'Hip hop kung fu'. There is a short film clip of highlights from the performance and a longer video of the full performance. The review describes the successful dance components, the musical innovations and commends individual performances. The writer applauds the directors, Emilio 'Buddha Stretch' and Austin Jr, and choreographers Michel Byrd-McPhee, Val 'Ms Vee' Ho and Austin Jr. The performance draws inspiration from kung-fu, pop culture of the 1970s and 80s, and Asia, particularly Wu-Tang Clan culture.

Educational value
  • This is a resource of great value for the Responding strand of the Dance curriculum in lower secondary schooling. The content descriptions focus on students responding to dance and dance artists and considering the broader contexts of their works, and their contribution to the development of contemporary dance. The resource gives students the opportunity to examine the performance closely and to read the reviewer's comments for integrating martial arts movements with contemporary hip-hop.
  • The resource contributes to students engaging with the cross-curriculum priority of Asia and Australia's relationship with Asia, particularly the fourth organising idea of the arts and literature of Asia influencing aesthetic and creative pursuits within Australia, the region and globally. The performance integrates both traditional and contemporary dance forms as a response to selected music that enhances the meaning of the artwork.
