Image The Mughal Court paintings

This is an enlargeable image of a Mughal Court painting (1560-1858) from a Bhagavata Purana showing a battle between Krishna and the fire-headed demon Mura. The Bhagavata Purana is a collection of Hindu devotional stories in Sanskrit, illustrating the stories of Krishna in human form. Accompanying the image is information about the process used to create the artwork, the materials used, the method of working on the floor, preservation and storage of the ancient artefact and a brief text about the artist. There are hyperlinks to related resources, and a blog for user comments.

Educational value
  • This is a resource of value for the Responding strand of the Visual arts curriculum in upper primary and lower secondary schooling. The content descriptions focus on students responding to the visual artworks of artists and considering the broader contexts of their works, particularly the historical, cultural and spiritual. The resource gives students the opportunity to examine the paintings closely and to respond to the information provided. Students can reflect on their own and other artists' works.
  • The resource contributes to students engaging with the cross-curriculum priority of Asia and Australia's relationship with Asia, particularly the fourth organising idea of the arts and literature of Asia influencing aesthetic and creative pursuits within Australia, the region and globally. The Mughal Court painting is exemplary of this historical style of spiritual and religious paintings.
