This is a website introducing the exhibition, 'Yoshitomo Nara: Nobody's fool' (2010-11, USA) featuring artworks by the Japanese pop artist. Information about the exhibition is organised under three headings: Isolation, Rebellion and Music. Also included are images and information about Nara's installations (including a virtual tour of the 'Dogs from your childhood' installation) and biographical information about the artist. Visitors to the site can access video interviews with the exhibition curators and with collaborative artist Hideki Toyoshima (YNG group). There are hyperlinks to related programs and exhibitions, and a community blog.

Educational value
  • This is a resource of great value for the Responding strand of the Visual arts curriculum in lower secondary schooling. The content descriptions focus on students responding to the visual arts works of artists and considering the broader contexts of artworks and their contribution to the development of art. The resource gives students the opportunity to examine the exhibition closely and to read about the inspiration, ideas and process of working as an artist. Students could reflect on their own and other artists' works.
  • The resource contributes to students engaging with the cross-curriculum priority of Asia and Australia's relationship with Asia, particularly the fourth organising idea of the arts and literature of Asia influencing aesthetic and creative pursuits within Australia, the region and globally. The artistic career and body of work by Yoshitomo Nara exemplifies the global influence of Japanese pop art as it encompasses elements and representations of contemporary society and graphic cultural references, including Japanese manga.
  • The resource may also have some relevance for the critical and creative thinking general capabilities. Students can analyse the ideas and beliefs that underpin the artist works.
