This is a rich teacher resource about ancient China. It contains 15 background information sheets; 11 lesson plans for whole-class discussions to introduce particular topics; four inquiry grid worksheets for gathering information; and nine follow-up lesson plans for activities that extend the content. The staff room resource accompanies the British Museum's ancient China website and provides an overview of the site, descriptions of its five chapters, a statement of its educational goals, and set-up advice, both technical and for the classroom.

Educational value
  • This is an outstanding teacher resource for the China option in the Asian world depth study in the year 7 history curriculum. It addresses every content description in the study and provides lesson plans to introduce and reinforce almost all study topics. The information sheets are particularly useful for teachers, providing easily understood summaries of a range of topics that have been prepared by experts from the British Museum and are relevant to the depth study.
  • Although written for students aged 9 to 11, the lesson plans are highly suitable and potentially engaging for year 7 students. They provide numerous opportunities for students to develop and extend nearly all the historical skills identified in the curriculum in the context of a study of ancient China.
  • The activities suggested in the resource will contribute to students attaining those elements of the year 7 history achievement standard that refer to: change and continuity over time and the effects of change; events and developments from the perspective of different people who lived at the time; the role of groups and the significance of particular individuals in society; and different interpretations of past events and developments.
  • The resource is also relevant for the Asia cross-curriculum priority, especially its organising ideas about: the diversity of the peoples and countries of Asia in ethnic background, traditions, cultures, belief systems and religions; the interrelationships between humans and the diverse environments in Asia; and the contribution of the people of Asia to world history.
