Learning objects Racing game with one die

TLF ID M012003

This is an interactive game that investigates probability by simulating a two-car race, in which the movements of the cars are based on the roll of a die. Cars advance when certain numbers are rolled, and the student can experiment with probability by selecting which car moves forward for a given outcome of the roll of a die. Cumulative statistics can be collected and these are displayed as percentages and as a pie chart.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This interactive resource is useful for the Australian Curriculum content descriptions in year 6 mathematics about conducting chance experiments and describing probabilities using percentages.
  • This resource can contribute to students attaining those elements of the achievement standards in year 6 about comparing observed and expected frequencies and communicating probabilities.
  • The resource is useful for investigating fair and unfair games as the outcome is based on the rules the student specifies.
  • This game is easy to use and the statistics are clearly displayed. The collection of cumulative statistics provides the opportunity to discuss experimental and theoretical probability.
