Educational value
  • This resource is valuable for addressing the Australian Curriculum: History content description in year 8 relating to a study of the Vikings. Students learn about the Vikings' knowledge of navigation, wind patterns and the sophisticated boat design that assisted them in their sea journeys to and from the countries they were going to raid.
  • It is useful for the evidence it provides of the nature of the Viking conquests and the perspective of the monks on the Viking raids and the looting of their monasteries and churches. Students analyse the words of the monk Alcuin in three extracts from his letters and answer questions about his point of view, attitudes and values.
  • It is useful for showing how the aims of the Viking raids expanded over time to include the colonisation of other lands. Students investigate the expansion of the Vikings to other countries including the time of year they sailed, where they landed, which towns or coastal areas they settled in and for what purpose.
