Teacher guide Democratic struggles - unit of work

TLF ID M009641

This is an extended unit of work about how democratic rights were achieved in Britain and Australia. It comes from the 'Discovering democracy' series of units and is organised around five focus questions explored through sequences of learning that include student worksheets and assessment tasks. Three of the focus questions are about the influence of Chartism. One is about who had the vote in Australia before democracy and the other is about how the franchise was extended. Selected sources and assessment criteria are included.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a highly valuable resource for history teaching and learning in year 9. The sequences of learning and student worksheets are directly relevant to at least six content descriptions in the following elective depth studies: Progressive ideas and movements (1750-1918); the Industrial Revolution (1750-1914); and Making a nation. The resource is one of the few digital resources currently available that deals extensively with Chartism.
  • The learning activities provide useful opportunities for students to develop and enhance their historical skills. These skills include processing and synthesising information from a range of sources for use as evidence in a historical argument. Some of the sources presented in the resource are fictional documents and are identified accordingly. They provide an interesting opportunity for students to evaluate the reliability and usefulness of sources.
