This is a unit of work about climate change and about how understanding the 'common good' is an important part of developing possible solutions. Intended for lower and middle secondary students, the unit involves students in developing a concept map and definition of sustainability, considering what can be done to slow the rate of climate change, and forming a judgement about whether sustainability is an achievable common good. Educational value
  • This is a very useful resource for the civics and citizenship curriculum area. Sustainability has a definite profile in this curriculum area and by the middle secondary years students are generally expected to be able to analyse the roles and responsibilities of individuals, companies, governments, producers and consumers in relation to sustainability.
  • Although the unit's suggested strategies are challenging, they are interesting and appropriate for the intended learners. The suggested time for the unit, 150 minutes, may well be possible for students who know something about the common good and are experienced in group processes and procedures. Other students will probably need longer. It is recommended that the unit 'Understanding the common good in Australian democracy' be completed as an introductory exercise for this unit.
