It describes the different origins of the colonies and their movement to self-government during the 19th century, and subsequent federation into one nation in 1901. The resource describes the structures, processes, symbols and elements of each of the parliaments. A section focused on political facts about each state and territory concludes the resource.

Educational value
  • This resource provides a valuable overview of Australian parliamentary democracy. It includes a brief political history of the colonies that enables students to sequence the major milestones towards self-government and federation. It is useful for the year 3 history substrand Community and remembrance and for the year 9 history depth study Making a nation.
  • The website explores the values represented in the symbols and emblems of the Australian Parliament and the parliaments of the states and territories. It includes illustrations of each symbol.
  • The resource explores the idea of political rights for all people. Students could use the Chartist checklist supplied on the website to compare rights achieved under the states or the Commonwealth with rights enjoyed in 19th-century England.
  • This resource investigates the history of the political rights of Indigenous peoples in Australia. It includes information on Indigenous rights prior to Federation and post-Federation. Students sequence the political rights of Indigenous peoples before and after Federation on a timeline and look at when Indigenous peoples received the right to vote in a federal election.
