This is an information sheet for teachers about the importance of town halls. It has three main elements: the first identifies what town halls were and are used for; the second gives some historical background for the town halls in five state capitals; and the third suggests that students become heritage detectives. This element includes questions students might investigate about their local town hall and provides an Australian Heritage Commission checklist for use when considering the town hall's heritage value.

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for local historical studies. Although the information sheet was written with years 5 and 6 students in mind, teachers can use the ideas and suggestions in year 2 history where the focus of study is the 'past in the present'. The idea of students acting as heritage detectives is especially relevant for the content descriptions about the history of a significant building and what it reveals about the past, and the importance today of a historical site such as a community building.
  • The resource may also be useful for the civics and citizenship curriculum area. It is important that upper primary students understand that there are three levels of government in Australia and that local councils, often meeting in the local town hall, play a significant part in providing community services.
