Learning objects Treasures of American history - online exhibition

This is an online exhibition showing the objects, artefacts and images that make up some of the treasures of US history. The treasures shown in this exhibition document eight of the challenging situations and issues that have helped to shape the USA. Topics include: revolution and the new nation; slavery; western expansion; the Civil War; women's suffrage; the Great Depression and World War II; civil rights and AIDS. The online exhibition was developed by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

Educational value
  • This online exhibition is a valuable resource for the years 6, 9 and 10 history curriculums and for years 11 and 12 modern history courses. The slavery items, for example, are highly relevant for the year 9 Movement of peoples depth study while the World War II items are of value for the World War II (1939-45) depth study in year 10. The women's suffrage and civil rights items offer a useful connection to studies in years 6 and 10.
  • Each of the eight areas of struggle, conflict or controversy opens in a separate section and provides, in one or two screens, a brief historical summary and one or more images of relevant US national treasures. The significance and historical value of each treasure is comprehensively but simply explained.
  • This resource provides an indication of the types of items museums collect and the value of museums in preserving a nation's historical treasures.
