This is a historical essay by Professor John Dower about how Japanese woodblock printmakers presented the war between Japan and China to the Japanese public. The highly readable and richly illustrated essay contains five chapters, more than 100 woodblock prints, a map showing the campaigns and several woodcut engravings. The chapters can be printed and the illustrations enlarged for close study. There are links to eight visual narratives. Some of the prints show scenes that may be disturbing.

  • This resource presents the most densely illustrated and accessible treatment of Meiji woodblock prints of the Sino-Japanese War presently available. They are essential sources for historical studies of the emergence of Japan as a great power and its emulation of other great powers by waging an imperialist war.
  • It is particularly valuable for modern history in years 11 and 12, especially for studies of the rise of Japan in the Meiji period. It is also useful for history in year 9, particularly for the elective depth study of Asia and the world. The prints are also of value for studies of Japanese printmaking.
  • Dower is Professor of History at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his essay offers a detailed historical and cultural 'reading' of the prints in the context of the Japanese 'throwing off Asia'. As part of his analysis, Dower highlights five topics: prints and propaganda, Kiyochika's war, 'Old China, New Japan', devil in the details and symbolic 'China'.
