TLF ID M006977

This is a telegraph form used to advise of the death of Sergeant Cyril John Stallard, one of three Australians killed in a bomber crash in Belgium in July 1942. It links to an online showcase called 'Find of the Month' via an educational resource page in the National Archives of Australia Virtual Reading Room (VRROOM). The showcase for November 2009 records how the town of Braine-le-Comte honoured the dead crewmen during and after the Second World War.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource provides access to a wealth of primary-source documents about the crashed bomber's Australian crewmen, Sergeants Stallard, Wyles and Kennedy. Such documents would be highly valuable for a historical case study of Australians serving in Bomber Command in the UK during the Second World War. The National Archives files about these airmen detail their service and the efforts made to keep their families informed about what had happened to them.
  • The letters and actions of the people of Braine-le-Comte described in 'Find of the Month' provide an example of how the citizens of occupied Europe responded to the efforts of the Allied forces to defeat Germany and achieve their liberation.
