  • Fraser was appointed caretaker prime minister following the dismissal of the Whitlam Labor government on 11 November 1975. A month later he was elected prime minister and pursued a platform of reducing expenditure while supporting an increase in defence spending. He also looked to continue relations with countries in the East and South-East Asian region while working on Australian immigration programs.
