Enhancing reading comprehension for Koori students: a cultural focus

Abstract

What teaching characteristics are likely to improve reading outcomes for Aboriginal students in years 2–7? The Expanded Central Gippsland Koori Literacy Project (ECGKLP) involved 19 primary schools and one secondary school in Gippsland and Mildura. It drew on the achievements of the Central Gippsland Reading Recovery Program. Strategies included teaching phonemic knowledge, word analysis, oral language and symbolic processing. Students were engaged in how to use effective word reading and analysis skills, and in learning reading comprehension strategies that they could use spontaneously and selectively.
