Making the links: literacy across learning areas in secondary school settings

Abstract

Many students reach middle years (years 7–9) unable to successfully comprehend complex subject area texts or to write extended text representative of their knowledge of the subject.

This project was designed around a two-year collaborative learning strategy. It helped learning area teachers (years 7–9) incorporate improvement and bring about change in the ways that literacy across the curriculum was perceived and taught in the middle years. The teachers identified their conversations about the student literacy skills and how to support them as one of the benefits of involvement in the project, as this led to more differentiated teaching and learning.
