Creating change as a literacy coach

Abstract

As part of the National Literacy and Numeracy Partnership (NLNP) initiative to improve NAPLAN outcomes in reading, a Literacy Coach was appointed to Allendale East Area School, an F–12 school in South Australia.

An intensive research-based phonics program was implemented for students in F–1; Australian Curriculum–aligned spelling programs were developed for years F–7; and guided reading groups were set up for underachieving students. Although the Literacy Coach position ended in April 2011, the programs have continued.
