Taking Off With Numeracy

Abstract

The Australian Government‒ funded Taking Off With Numeracy (TOWN) strategy focused on improving the numeracy skills of upper primary students who were not performing at the expected stage.

Teachers engaged in professional learning over the school year, enhancing their skills to assess students' numeracy understandings and identify any weaknesses, and monitor students' progress against a clear sequence of conceptual development. The program helped teachers move each student beyond the identified learning hurdle. Emphasis was placed on measurement concepts; the teaching of multiplication and division concepts; and the teaching sequence for developing students' place-value understanding.
