Representations of Oral Language and Engagement in Mathematics

Abstract

Representations of Oral Language and Engagement in Mathematics (RoleM) aimed to improve students' success in engaging with the 'big ideas' of mathematics by improving their use of mathematical language, their understanding of mathematical representations and their ability to think mathematically. RoleM also aimed to improve teachers' knowledge and pedagogy relating to early years mathematics. Teachers were supported through the provision of differentiated and developmental learning activities, hands-on resources, and a website with digital resources for electronic whiteboards and computers.

There has been statistically significant improvement in almost all students' results in schools using the strategy, in urban, rural and remote contexts.
