Aboriginal Cultures, Ch 1: Introduction to culture with Aunty Julie

SUBJECTS:  Civics and Citizenship, History

YEARS:  F–2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–8, 9–10

Meet Aunty Julie McHale from Nalderun, a central Victorian Aboriginal education organisation.

We see some of her students harvesting, preparing and cooking in a traditional way.

What does culture mean to you? We all have a culture we identify with, whether it's linked to our nationality, ethnicity, religious beliefs or language.

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, culture plays an especially significant role. Why do you think this is?

Think about what happened to Aboriginal Country, clans and languages and how this has affected many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' identities.

Things to think about

  1. 1.How does Aunty Julie express her culture? How does she feel when she participates in cultural activities?
  2. 2.Aunty Julie says that if Aboriginal people are given the opportunity to practise culture "their whole being is lifted".
  3. 3.Why do you think Aboriginal people feel good participating in cultural activities?
  4. 4.Why do think it’s important for all Australians to learn about Aboriginal cultures?
