Making a Mini-documentary, Ep 1: Basic equipment for filming a video documentary

SUBJECTS:  Arts

YEARS:  3–4, 5–6

What basic equipment do you need to film a short video documentary?

Catherine Marciniak and Benj Binks from ABC Open show you some useful cameras and other equipment, and give you some handy tips on how to use them. This is one of eight clips on making a mini-documentary.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you ever made a video? What equipment did you use? How did it turn out? What worked and what didn't?
  2. 2.What are the four types of cameras that you could use? What are the three things Catherine says to make sure to do or have? What tips does Benj give for filming with a smartphone? What information on microphones does Catherine give? What is tricky about focusing a digital SLR? What are some of the things you can use to avoid a shaky video? What are the advantages of a wearable camera?
  3. 3.Have you ever used any of this equipment? Have you learnt anything new? From the information in the clip, write a list of equipment you might need to make a video. Using the information from Catherine and Benj and anything you've learnt from your own experience, write down some tips on how to use the equipment.
  4. 4.Experiment with a camera and equipment. Find out what the camera can and can't do. Try different sorts of shots, like close-ups, mid-shots and wide shots. What's the best way to hold the camera and to focus it? Where is the microphone and how well does it record at different distances? Try different methods for steadying your camera so you don't get blurry or shaky images.
