Making a Mini-documentary, Ep 3: Setting up equipment for a video interview

SUBJECTS:  Arts

YEARS:  3–4, 5–6

Camera and microphone may be all the equipment that you need for a video interview.

Catherine Marciniak and Benj Binksfrom ABC Open will show you that there is a little bit more involved in setting these up.

This clip is one of eight on making a mini-documentary.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you ever struggled to hear what's being said in an interview or voiceover because of other sounds? How did this make you feel? Do you know what the three standard shot compositions in film are?
  2. 2.What advice does Benj give on setting up microphones? What are the three standard shot compositions? What does Benj say about the type of composition you should choose? What noises should you listen out for?
  3. 3.This clip contains examples of each of the three standard shot compositions. Make a quick drawing of each of the three and label them for reference. Wherever you are, stop still for a minute and listen carefully. What can you hear? Are there any background noises that might interfere with your recording of audio during the interview? When might you want to use background noise?
  4. 4.Test out camera and sound equipment that you might use for an interview to find out how best to set it up. Practise on yourself or a partner. Try using different shots to see what works best for an interview.
