Come and see Hugo's house getting built.

Find out how the concrete foundations are laid. What comes next?

Carpenters build a wooden frame.

Spot the tools used to build the house. How is each tool used?


Things to think about

  1. 1.Sometimes a house is built on a concrete base (slab) called the 'foundations'. What might be the next thing built on top of the slab? What materials can be used to build the outside walls of a house?
  2. 2.Why is the ground being made flat before builders can start their work? What pipes are being put in the trenches? Why is steel mesh laid before concrete for the foundations is poured? See if you can spot the different tools being used. How many can you count? Which tools are used for cutting, hitting, joining, smoothing, digging or levelling?
  3. 3.Draw the tools being used to build the house. Describe the use of each tool. For example, 'A nail gun is used to join wood.' Give three reasons why wood is used to build the frame of Hugo's house. Why is concrete used for the foundations (the slab)?
  4. 4.Design and make a frame for a house. You can only use cardboard strips. Investigate ways to strengthen the cardboard so that you make the frame strong. Try folding the cardboard in different ways and joining cross-pieces to limit any movement. Can your frame hold up a roof?
